Independent Shopping - Church Road

Our favourite independent shops on Church Road

Nestled in one of the city’s most vibrant pockets, Church Road is a hub of independent spirit - from family-run bakeries and natural wine bars to artisan shops and community-led events. With the beautiful St George’s Park just on the doorstep it’s the perfect spot for a day out with friends.

Here’s our guide to our favourite places.

Coffee Shops & Bakeries

The Orchard Coffee & Bakery
Set in a converted church at the top of the park, The Orchard is a mix of flaky pastries, fresh bread, and expertly brewed coffee. The in-house bakery means everything is fresh as can be. Check out their evening events too.

Grounded Cafe
Cosy, welcoming and ideal for whiling away an hour or two. Think comfy armchairs, a sunny garden, homemade cakes and a laid-back menu of brunchy favourites. A proper feel-good spot.

Southville Deli
A go-to for all things wholesome and delicious. Their window seat is a prime people-watching perch, best enjoyed with a fairtrade coffee and one of their fresh sandwiches or stuffed vine leaves. Don’t leave without browsing the organic wines and local beers.

Cake Box
Bright, bold, and entirely vegan – Cake Box is a must for sweet tooths. Whether you’re celebrating something or just fancy a treat, their cakes are as beautiful as they are delicious.

The Bristol Loaf
Everything you’d want from a local bakery — artisan breads, flaky pastries, and a deep care for seasonal, organic ingredients. Pop in for brunch or grab a loaf for later. Don’t forget to check out their sister space, Native Vine, right next door.

The Crafty Egg
A true all-rounder. Loved for its hearty brunches, artisan pizzas, and cocktails, The Crafty Egg also hosts craft nights, live music, workshops and more. It’s a lively, family-friendly space with real heart.

Pubs & Restaurants

Pickled Parrot
A charming little micro pub pouring top-notch craft beers and serving up the cosiest of atmospheres.

Siam Smile
Warm, welcoming, and packed with flavour - Siam Smile is your go-to for homestyle Thai and Malaysian dishes made with love.

Red Church
Woodfired pizzas, stacked burgers, and a top Sunday roast. With its airy interiors and cosy booths, it’s a great all-rounder for families. Keep an eye out for their music nights and pop-ups.

Fire Engine Pub
A local pub. Classic pints, food and plenty of live sport.

Simple Shawarma
Run by two Kurdish brothers, this little takeaway spot packs a punch. Everything’s fresh, handmade (including the traditional bread), and full of flavour.

The Lock Up
This family-run spot dishes up seasonal British cuisine with flair. Great for a relaxed dinner with friends – we love the conservatory seating out front.

The Dark Horse
A rustic pub with a rooftop terrace that catches the afternoon sun just right. From roasts to events in the back room, it’s a great all-rounder.

Oh My Cod
Classic chippy, no fuss, just really good fish and chips.

Native Vine
Attached to The Loaf, Native Vine is a haven for natural wine lovers. Think organic bottles from small producers, seasonal small plates, and tasting events. A dreamy spot for an evening unwind.

The George and Dragon Pub
Live music, local ales, and a proper community feel. Head here for the Sunday sundown sessions or one of their other regular music nights.

Old Stillage Pub
Great live gigs, a sun trap garden, home-cooked grub and a pool table – this one ticks all the boxes for a laid-back night out.
