Caring for Handmade, Naturally Dyed Clothing
At Prior, we believe that the story behind your clothing matters. We champion slow fashion, working with independent makers who use natural fibres, botanical dyes, and age-old techniques to create garments full of soul. Each piece in our clothing collection is crafted by hand – no two items are the same, and that’s the beauty of it. Small details in the weave, print, or tone reflect the human touch and the earth-friendly processes behind them.
Looking after these pieces properly helps preserve their character and ensures they last for years to come.
The Beauty of Natural Colour
Natural dyes behave a little differently to synthetic ones – and that’s all part of the charm. Colours may shift subtly over time, depending on how often the garment is worn, how it’s washed, and how much sun it sees. This gentle evolution is a natural part of the dye’s life cycle.
To keep colours richer for longer:
- Store garments away from direct sunlight
- Avoid overwashing – wear more, wash less
- Be mindful of contact with acidic products like deodorant, citrus, vinegar, or skincare
These little acts of care help your clothes age gracefully.
Caring for Linen
Linen is a dream fabric – breathable, durable, and made to soften with time. It may feel slightly firm at first wear, but softens beautifully the more you move in it.
To encourage that softness:
- Soak in water with a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda
- Use a gentle, eco fabric softener
- Tumble dry on low for a short time (note: may slightly affect dye)

Caring for Cotton
Many of our hand-dyed cotton pieces are made from breathable, lightweight fabric that’s kind to skin and kind to the planet. Cotton is durable, but it thrives on a bit of gentle care.
Here's how to look after it:
- Hand wash in cool to lukewarm water using natural soap or an eco laundry detergent
- Avoid bleach, strong detergents or fabric softeners with synthetic fragrances
- Dry flat or hang to dry out of direct sun
- Expect a little colour run in early washes – it’s totally normal with natural dye
Cotton garments often soften and become more wearable with every wash and wear.
Washing Guidance
When it’s time for a clean:
- Hand wash items separately, especially the first few times
- Use lukewarm water and minimal detergent
- Air dry in the shade
- Avoid the tumble dryer (except linen, briefly, on low if softening is desired)
- Never use harsh chemicals or stain removers – they can strip the dye and damage natural fibres

A Note on Indigo
Indigo-dyed garments are known for their deep, moody blues – and their unpredictable nature. The pigment can rub off onto skin or lighter garments at first, so it’s a good idea to give them a few gentle washes before wear. This initial transfer is part of what makes indigo special – a dye that truly lives and breathes with you.
You can explore our indigo styles to find something rich, soulful, and full of character.
