J.West attributes his creativity to growing up in the West country, in the heart of a city famous for its street art Vanguards and the local boy Banksy.
Strong within this community is the love and support for local, independent artists and makers, with the streets themselves an open source of influence and creative talent to discover around every corner.
‘Bristol is an easy place to be inspired to want to produce a joyous mess and claim it to be ‘art’, he adds.
West describes his style as ‘supercharged with colour, combined with an eye for an absurd light- hearted scenario and that hopefully raise a smile’.
This exhibition hosted by the award-winning PRIOR, comes from a place of ‘not overthinking’, thus allowing the chance for something surprising and potentially beautiful to take shape through a process of ‘make and play’.
West advocates for a clear divide between creating and critiquing – actions which must occur separately. ‘Curiosity can unlock the unknown potential in each of us’, he states, ‘but only the individual can make that happen.
